He’s got her tail feathers up!
The rules of a generous doggo,
are whatever helps the most.
Particularly helping a deck
that turns itself to toast.
What does she have to trade,
and what price will she pay?
Benji’s a great young guy
he could do this all day.
I wonder if Nora’s taking notes,
Or if she’s noted he’s not back?
When you’re obsessed by the task,
it’s far too easy to lose track.
You continue to amaze me with your speed and your poetry
Diolch yn fawr iawn.
Benji’s a good boy. And you excel as always, as the Guru said.
Also include Ashnod’s Altar! It’s colorless so you can drop it into any deck without restrictions, and it allows you to sacrifice any creature for two energy/mana. It really shines if you have a way to get a load of cheap/free creatures to sacrifice to it, since you can just keep activating it over and over so long as you have creatures available for sacrifice!
And don’t forget Ashnod’s Coupon for a free drink!
My shop actually does that. They stick coupons into your Commander draw for the day so you could get a Free Drink coupon instead of a random card.
And she also needs some cards to get the Alabasta Phoenix onto her hand, otherwise the chance to draw it is too low.
The way the cards are spread out implies a two-copy limit. Which means either every deck is expected to have card draw & tutors, or every deck is as inconsistent as Hearthstone and games just regularly go to double digit turns.
Phoebe: “So I can’t use this card to open doors?” I guess it’s a key stone card, rather than a key.
Benji is great boy, no matter what Katsumi thinks. He’s becoming a Shounen benefactor to the Shounen hero Phoebe. I wonder if Benji thinks she’s a Red Cardinal Hybrid… How surprised would he be to learn she’s an actual Phoenix? Funny enough, Phoebe actually fits the older legends that there’s only one Phoenix in existence and lives in an eternal cycle of death and rebirth, as she’s the only Phoenix Hybrid in existence so far. She’s probably not able to come back from the dead as a baby, though. Phoebe’s card deck is gonna be rising from the ashes just in time for the tournament!
And Alabasta Phoenix? I didn’t know the Kingdom of Alabasta had a Phoenix, though given that they’re based off of Egypt, it would make sense if their local legends told tale of the Bennu (a solar bird often equated to the Phoenix, if not their name for it). Maybe we should ask Oda Sensei on the SBS about it, though One Piece already has their own Phoenix in the form of a mythical model of the Bird Bird Fruit… I wonder if Phoebe wishes she could have that power. When will Kai and Kaya show up? As the titular Twin Dragons, they are contractually obligated to appear in every chapter.
{Castle Oblivion flashbacks}
Katsumi backed off once she realized her suspicions were baseless.
Benji just made Phoebe extremely happy. I wonder what Benji will get in return?
See, THIS is what I meant in my comment under the previous strip: you need to ACTIVELY get value out of the self-reviving creatures’ DEATHS. Them dying in combat isn’t good enough, it needs to be proactive. Cards like this that sacrifice creatures as an added cost to justify their powerful effect are ideal.
It’s only fitting that the super rare phoenix hybrid should have a super rare phoenix card. 🙂
Okay I have a couple questions:
1) Is that based on an actual card game?
2) If not then was that a One Piece reference?
I think it’s a serial-numbers-filed-off-so-they-don’t-get-sued amalgamation of Magic the Gathering and possibly Pokemon
with a little bit of yu-gi-oh thrown in cause benji specified attack position earlier
Nora is not gonna have a problem with Benji helping somebody out. This is probably why she likes him anyway, he’s a selfless, generous person.
“So what do you want in return? You’ve seen my entire collection….”
“How about *your soul*, young lady….?”
“M… m… my what?”
“*Your soul? It’s a fair trade, wouldn’t you say…….”
LOL just kidding. Just felt like if it wasn’t Benji, it could end up as 1 of those situations – helpful stranger gives you a hand, then offers the perfect solution to your problems, all for the “meagre price” of *your soul*…..
Heh! Well, there are some parallels between a dog hybrid, and a character who shapeshifts between poodle and human. If Benjistopheles asks you to sign a contract in blood, it’s probably safest to refuse. 😉
The Magical Mister Benjistopheles!
Benji is an definitely a catch. Hope Nora knows that.
… you know, you might be able to make that into an actual game and you’d probably get a good number of players (including maybe me)
Where did he hide that folder?
I believe it is her folder, and he had the card either in his deck, or as sideboard so just happened to have it on him? I’d call plot armor unless his deck utilizes a similar strategy unless he had a set of ultra-rares specifically for trade purposes in a separate deck box. That wouldn’t take up much pocket space.
Presumably in his backpack. (He wasn’t carrying the backpack when they entered the convention. I guess he left it in the car initially, and went out and fetched it before the tournament.)
We had already seen that Benji is good with Persuasion. Now we can see it transferred to trade. While it’s in a different scale, he could be a great help in Cleo’s future company in the PR department.
