The beginning
The first page answers an important question about the world they live in that I saw a lot of people getting confused over. Are Kai and Kaya the only dragons/hybrids in the world? Are there humans? Why are their parents human? Well, here is the answer; Even science doesn’t know, but it’s a fact that it happens XD
As a doctor, I’d have to say there’d be a lot of investigative studies done…most of which are already done as part of prenatal and neonatal care. Cord blood samples would obviate most of the tissue sampling, and internal structures would require a pediatric MRI at some point (least invasive, least radiation, and with the prevalence and public interest, you know the US health department is going to kick in some healthy grants).
It’d also help to have some data just in case. I could see some orthopedic surgeon trying to figure out how to set a broken tail, or a neurosurgeon trying to figure out how to approach a pediatric brain injury (I followed two of those in med school).
Doctors are well aware of the new anatomy they have to work with, and things like how to set a broken tail are takes straight from the vet’s arsenal. Hybrids usually don’t differ a lit from humans, so most of the regular medicine practices are the same.
The ears, the tail, not to mention changes in the composition of skin and other features are more than enough to classify hybrids as a new species. Or they would if they would be consistent.
Personally, I think this has an outright supernatural influence (barring super-advanced aliens are using hyper-advanced nanotech to screw with humans in this way and hey, if they do this why not others?). Maybe old mythological creatures and spirits being reborn? It’s notable because while there are a lot of animal hybrids, the Romeros are not from natural animals. No natural creature can breath fire, the closest are spitting acid. Also notable that there is a dog hybrid, which is a new sub-species of wolf.
Technically speaking, they only qualify as a new species if they are unable to breed with their progenitor species (i.e. humans) but ARE able to breed amongst themselves (i.e. not sterile, which is precisely what the classic definition of “hybrid” would typically indicate).
IF they can breed with humans then they essentially ARE humans. At most a different sub-species. If they’re literally hybrids in the classic real-world sense then they’re kinda mangled in the reproductive department and can’t reproduce with anyone nor anything.
I expect the definition would get rewritten if we ever encounter something sufficiently weird.
Going with the scifi example of asari, that can breed with anything that doesn’t protest too much. Does that make every other being a sub-species of asari? Probably not.
Still, yeah, I’d buy sub-species for the hybrids here. Same approach as in Shadowrun and similar fiction.
In reply to Zenny:
No, it would not. The only way that would be the case is if “every other being” was directly descended from the asari. Directly descended meaning that asari evolved into each of those sub-species themselves. I honestly don’t care enough to find out if this is the case in that setting, but those are the facts.
If we were to encounter an alien species we could breed with it would be strange, yes. But it would not change that criteria for being recognized as a new species as we would likely not be their progenitor species, and they could not be ours as we descended from Homo Sapiens.
Ockham’s Razor would suggest that the “Nobody knows why” line is a case of the classic unreliable narrator trope… somewhat evidenced by the casual tone of the narration.
I would imagine that some people know HOW it comes about, which is probably the pertinent matter. Most likely it just remains a mystery to the general public within the narrative.
That would be my guess-work from just two panels.
Well, this comic seems worth bookmarking. Good art, nice humor… and an author apparently named like me.
Looking forward to see where this goes.
Oh nice, same name. High five 😀
And thanks, I’m glad you like my comic ^^
This is exactly the sort of thing I love to over think. What are the results of DNA tests? What happend to the first ones? How can that baby hear without inner ears? What patterns are there to the animals?
Hub
I hadn’t noticed the ear thing. Chances are that baby was deaf.
Even if it did have the right hearing organs, without a porthole to the outside world they would do the child no good. Which isn’t to say it is impossible to hear without earholes; rather that whatever hearing organs a tiger/human hybrid has are likely to need earholes to function properly.
Maybe the first few hybrids had some kinks to work out? I doubt they still have such issues.
since there (are)HYBRIDS=Different race shouldn’t there be A Lot of racism and crime 😕

Hey-o, new reader here. Just stumbled across this comic, and wanted to say that I love the artwork and can’t wait to see where this world takes me.

Hello like your comic and also my friend sent me a link to this.Nice Art work and backround story
When do comic strips come out
Am rereading from the beginning and wondering, will we ever meet the first Hybrid?
That would be amazing! Since it’s a tiger from the pic I think we should keep a look out for a high school tiger hybrid.
Smart girl! I didn’t even think of that; now I’ll have to start watching. 🙂
I wonder if anyone will ever read this?
For any fellow readers who happen to see this keep on reading!
Robin, On the very of chance that you ever read this I want to say that I love your comic( maybe a bit too much),and that you should keep up the good work!:)
I’m reading it after finding a link on FurAffinity and thinking it sounded interesting.
This was the beginning of one of my favourite hours of my life.
I’m glad to have discovered this, even if I’m a bit late.
When did this strip come out originally? The dates on the first few are the same so I think there must’ve been a re-upload of them or something. When did you think up the concept?
I ask because it’s similar to My Hero Academia in basic concept: something unexplained (at first, at least) happens in the recent past that causes babies to be randomly born somewhat inhuman (people with “quirks” in the MHA world which are various super-powers and more than a few including animal-like traits and visible deformities, “hybrids” here — also, vastly different proportions [1‰ hybrids here, ⅘ with “quirks” so that it’s normal humans who are the ⅕ minority after that first quirk in the MHA world — the first quirk baby in MHA had the power to glow and was doing so at birth], and in both cases the story focuses on young high-school kids) and I believe that came out in 2015. I’m not accusing nor even suggesting that either ripped off the other. I just find the similarities fascinating (ditto, say, Harry Potter vs. Neil Gaiman’s The Books of Magic that preceded it by a decade).
Dang it. Like always, I’m late to comment something.
Imagine if deku was a hybrid? That would be cool!
Hi! HUGE fan, here! Any idea of posting your next book?
I hope to see more of the first hybrid!
i love soda
