Well, that last question was obvious.
Have I mentioned how much I love your comic?
Mythicals are awesome
but endure all the awe,
answering questions asked
a million times before.
Be cool, dear Near,
with your boyfriend here.
You don’t want to make
his day’s joy disappear.
He can’t fly from the table;
he’s rooted to the ground
but it’s safe to say…
Irritation has been found.
…until he turns 16?
That’s when he’ll start to grow horns, not wings.
If she hugs him, he’ll probably ask if she’s feeling for wings and she’ll say something about ‘just checking’. They’re a cute couple, I’d like to see if they can maintain a long-distance relationship. And at 16 all boys grow horn(y).
Yes, while Anabella mentioned ‘dragon’ in passing a while back, in the context it could have been seen as an embellishment to fit the theme of knights.
I’m not surprised about the wings question; wings are almost as defining for a dragon as fire breathing.
If memory serves, the Twins also have very unique scales, which are also party fireproof.
Good thing Near seems more interested than concerned.
Near’s reaction is so adorkable. And then she’s back to teasing.
Heh the wings question! Love how Near is so excited! Kai’s reaction to the last question is great too!
Agreed; I really like how much Kai is eating up all this attention…until the very last panel. 🙂 🙂 🙂
So Near doesn’t have night vision, or Benji super-smell?
Or “normal” animal charateristics are not considred super-powers?
Because, IE, even only having cat’s mobile external ears would result in a greatly enhanced hearing, even mantaining a completely human internal ear.
I think that there’s enough foreshadowing in the various discussions in this comic that this will be cemented more firmly. Remember that the oldest hybrid is about 16, kids (and people in general) can be unaware enough to not realize that their abilities are unusual.
Even with testing. Tests can’t find these things out if they are not being used correctly, or not asking the right questions.
I wonder about that: We’ve seen the twins celebrate turning 15 in comic so how far off are the oldest hybrids from hitting 17? Will we see the twins wishing Rex a happy birthday upon their return from Italy?
The bit about kids being unaware that their abilities is not normal is true. When I first went to school, I sat up front, because I could not read the blackboard from farther back. Than the day came when I could not read it from there. Glasses. Still the number one event in my life, and I’m 70. It is in fact possible to see things clearly that are out of arm’s reach.
It was covered in Jessie’s adventure and the world building side comic that enhanced senses and physicality are possible from hybridization, but it doesn’t seem to be more than a standard deviation or two above what you would normally expect from a human. Canine hybrids likely have a more sensitive sense of smell, but not to the point of being considered super-smell. The twin’s strength seems to be an outlier, as is Jin’s “clairvoyance.” With Katsumi’s cooperation Jin can “see” things from angles he shouldn’t, like reading a card that is facing away from him. I think a test like that was implied in Jin’s paperwork we got to see that is probably what most people interpret katsumi as at least.
Benji’s super-power is that he “can wag his tail really fast!” 😉 🙂
Maybe he’s like an eastern dragon? They don’t need wings. Have Kai or Kaya ever simply attempted to fly? I don’t mean like jumping off a roof. More like Videl in DBZ.
Not sure if there are other dragons like that, but he’s definitely not an eastern dragon, or he wouldn’t be mistaken for a reptile. They have scales like a carb, and antlers like a deer.
Um, I…. think you need to watch this….

…About 47 seconds in specifically. Enjoy… 😋
One old term for a wingless dragon was “Worm” or “Wurm” or “Wyrm”, aka a Germanic dragon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanic_dragon.
I was going to say that his primary external appearance is 100% based on an Eastern Dragon. After all, he has the hair/mane running down his spine that images of Western Dragon’s usually don’t have, but is depicted on pretty much EVERY Eastern Dragon image I have ever seen.
That said, the fire-breathing is VERY much a Western Dragon thing. Eastern Dragons are related to the elements, typically Water as Rivers, Lakes, Oceans & Waterfalls, though I have also heard of Wood as the Azure Dragon representing that element.
Whether or not they have a Reverse Scale (innate weak point), or develop a Dragon Ball (basically a mystical sphere connected to them) or horns as they grow is something to find out as the story progresses and the character’s age.
I have read that in chinese mythology eastern dragons were either water (fearing fire) or fire (fearing water) with no physical differences. And there is an ice dragon in “Journey to the West”.
The Azure Dragon is the representative of East, Spring and the Wood Element. They’re one of the Four Symbols, the other three being the Vermillion Bird of the South representing Fire, the White Tiger of the West, representing Metal (though Wikipedia doesn’t directly mention what element it represents) and the Black Turtle-Snake/Warrior of the North, representing Water, who happens to also be a snake.
One story I read written by someone who lived in China put forth in their story that the Jade Emperor was supposed to represent Earth and the Center/China itself. This is the same person who gave me the idea that the White Tiger represented Metal, though Wikipedia does directly mention that the Four Symbols each represent one of the five Chinese Elements (Fire, Water, Earth, Metal & Wood).
The Reverse Scale thing is used in Japanese Stories regularly, and, looking it up, it apparently started as a metaphor in an essay. The Ball thing I remember being told, and is apparently typically a flaming pearl that would either be underneath their chin, something they’re chasing or something they’re fighting with another dragon over.
Lights candle with dragonbreath, “I’m not superpowered.”
Standard Kai, I suppose…
I guess his strength and fire feel like rather modest abilities compared to what he’s seen in superhero cartoons.
If he did have tiny wings, he’d probably dress more like Ikaros from Heaven’s Lost Property; shirt with wing holes, and a loose jacket over it to stop them from bumping into things.
Kai’s ears look very much like wings in the last panel, just when he says he doesn’t have wings. 🙂 (I don’t think they’re quite large enough to fly with though. 😉 )
If Kai (or Kaya) does spontaneously combust, would he survive or last longer? My own OC can spontaneously combust when he gets hot (due to his draconic pyrokinesis) but it’s rather harmless to him.
Kai seems used to answering that last question, if his expression is anything to go by. Good thing Near isn’t scared off by a half dragon boyfriend. I wonder how long until she’ll realize that Romero Dragons come as a package deal…
I agree with Near about Kai having superpowers, he has natural abilities above the scope of what Humans are normally capable of, enhanced strength and durability, fire breathing, flame resistant skin, and enhanced hearing. Those are what most people consider superpowers for Human beings. Kai is just being modest about how awesome he is XD.
Kai and Kaya are both highly fire resistant. To the point where Kaya thought nothing of putting out a flame about the size of a lit match by clapping her hands around it. Their flame is also a highly-flammable liquid they naturally produce and simply squirt out of their mouth. The flame previously mentioned was ignited due to a swab and a careless wriggle in the air.
Anyone can put out the match flame that way, if they are quick and/or lick their hands first. 😉 It’s just way easier and safer for Kaya. 🙂
Is Jin going to come up in the conversation?
Can’t blame her for being exited for meeting a mythical… mythical…
She already liked him, but now she’s more than curious and got questions! 🙂
I think Near wants to be Kai’s Lois Lane.
Kai’s response in the last panel is a nice mix of two things:
1. Robin talking directly to the audience.
2. The start of a Red Bull commercial.
Seems like Near is excited, and to be honest, who wouldn’t be?
And it seems we’re harking back to hybrid characteristics. Dragon twins: fire production, strength, … Do we know their speed on their feet? I’m curious as to what other attributes the twins and other hybrid may possess.
Oh, God, I love this girl. She goes from confusion to fangirl to giving him snark in seconds.
Kai is a very lucky guy. Here’s hoping these two can stay together somehow, I want more Near even after they get back from Italy.
The next morning….
Kai: *wakes up yawns and stretches* Mmmmmm, man! Why’s my back so itchy? *Scratches* Eh? Are those bumps? Maaaaaan, hope I’m not coming down with something on vacation! That’s the worst!
Near, you are going tobe surprised as to how many mythicals that Kai and Kaya know and are friends with
He doesn’t have wings *yet,* at least!
As far as wings go, they may grow after he reaches a certain age.
He isn’t a oriental type, his body is to short, so he might be like
a medieval age type. Depending on which books he’s based on
they might not grow until he reaches of age or a huge stress
would cause them to pop out.
Hybrids are still primarily human, and we’ve seen a snake-person his own age about the same size. So saying he’s not an Oriental Type due to that is just wrong. Instead, I put forth that the hair running down his and his sister’s backs are more typically seen on Oriental Dragon Depictions, while Western Dragons almost never have that. That said, the fire-breathing is more Western Dragon than typical Oriental Dragon, so him and his sister are likely a Hybrid of both Dragon’s.
Per Robin, some time back; there are _no wings_ in the twins’ future. Sorry, Everypony.
I tend to use Xanth as the template for some of the more common mythical creatures. As such, dragons come in many forms. Xanth is fully equipped on the dragon front. Land dragons do exist, no wings. So they are fire breathing land dragons, medium sized, that walk on 2 legs.
Kai’s expressions are so adorable.
Including the last panel. 🙂
