Re: JA – I assume given that this is the end of chapter 3 you will be compiling an archive of this chapter soon, as well? ~
Absolutely, and start the remake of the first chapter into comic pages, as was promised on the kickstarter stretch goals ^^
The comic will get it’s own website then as well.
The day finishes with a Shark;
And she’s swimming just fin(e);
Torpedoing the water;
flowing like fine wine.
A change of location;
from the set to the pool,
as Drago and Viper
keep themselves looking cool.
It’s pizza to finish
a traditional dish
with many a topping…
I wonder if one’s fish?
I’m impressed with the speed at which you write these
Very nice!
Bet Welshy would make a fun public speaker. 😉 🙂
She’s actually a dolphin, but I can totally see how she looks like a shark xD
I was flipflopping between Dolphin and Shark for ages. (At least five minutes)
The big giveaway is the alt text – but I made that mistake too.
It´s most visible on her face, the typical snout of a dolphin is recognizable.
A shark would have an entirely different head/face, i would guess.
Given the existence of a fish hybrid, it would be hard to tell the difference between a shark hybrid and a dolphin hybrid. Electrosensory ability or sonar would be one way. Easiest would be the tail, up and down for shark, left and right for dolphin. Images not helpful, they are intended to be realistic, not poses.
luckily the rat used an ABCB pattern this time – so swapping the last word of the first line won’t break it
Yeah, I doubt the fin on her back would help her swim speed, but if the fin on her tail doesn’t help, she’s doing something extremely wrong.
The way fish swim (and I assume that it’s the case for sharks and dolphins too), they actually create and manipulate vortexes so that they actively assist in their swim speed – so much so that in the right situation, the fish doesn’t need to put in any effort to swim upstream (specifically, when it’s hanging out behind a rock, so it wouldn’t be all that useful here, but their tail is still an extremely efficient way of getting speed in water).
…Although now I’m curious, would a dolphin hybrid have a blowhole that they could breathe through, or would they be stuck with the human standard front of face options?
They wouldn’t have a blowhole. That’s not really compatible with human anatomy, and that’s still the main makeup of their anatomy.
*Quickly looks up dolphin blowhole anatomy
…I’m pretty sure that it’s just a nose that’s migrated upwards, going up in front of the brain, instead of all the way to the snout, and given the other remarkable similarities between her head shape and that of a full dolphin, having a nose at the front of the face is possibly the weirder option…
Not having a Melon however, seems like a probable situation (cetologists *think* it’s a sound lens that helps with echolocation, but it’s not fully understood – also, the wiki page for “Melon (cetacean)” has a photo of a dolphin that’s been cut open to show the melon, so research at your own risk)
So she likely doesn’t have a melon in her melon.😉
Maybe future generations of Hybrids will have additional organs from the nonhuman parts of their DNA, they’ll be like the Quirk users of My Hero Academia…
Nice extra bit of lore there. Now we know hybrid biology is primarily animal traits constructed around human anatomy. I guess I hadn’t thought about it too much since most hybrids have been of animals that share rudimentary designs with humans. But it is good to know you have thought that through. Consistent rules are important when world-building.
I think it was already mentioned multiple times …
It’s why the twins weren’t given wings.
Yet.
They could always grow in.
Daniel here. Random thought, a Dolphin Hybrid doesn’t have a blowhole cause it’s a significant variation on Human Biology, so I’m guessing a Shark Hybrid wouldn’t have gills, but WOULD have Electrosensory Perception organs? Look like freckles, picks up electrical fields in the area, some species can actively “ping” with it like sonar, range greatly increases once they get in water…
Actually, it would be interesting to see a Shark & a Dolphin Hybrid interacting – sharks avoid dolphins cause they can get protective and beat even Great White Sharks up…
Any particular reason the dolphin girl has violet or indigo hair?
Who among this trio do you think will bump into the twins first?
Fashion statement, mostly. She just likes the color ^^
Well , dolphins being shaped to race in water : it’s lightly unfair for other competitors , even if ^_^”
Well, since it hasn’t been asked yet: does the dolphin girl go for anchovies on her pizza?
These side chapters have been fun, thanks for doing them and thank you Reptilefan and Light Hope for supporting the comic enough to get these done!
No, she goes for pizza under her anchovies 🙂
Ooh! Fun bit of dolphin trivia that I just remembered:
Dolphins only ever have one half of their brain asleep at a time, so that they’re always alert enough to be able to watch out for predators and go up for air!
I kinda wish I could do that, but I doubt it’d be as helpful as it sounds for us modern-day humans.
Dolphin noises! Bahahahahaha! Bahahaha! Does Diana laugh like that?
The indigenous peoples of the Amazon have myths about river dolphins able to transform themselves into humans. Those people would likely be confused by the sight of Diana or any other Dolphin Hybrid. Interesting to see that Viper’s cousin is a Dolphin Hybrid, it just goes to show how varied families with Hybrids can get.
That is a neat bit of trivia, I can agree to that.
I wonder if Diana’s skin is as smooth to the touch as an actual dolphin’s is… She probably has a lot of people trying to touch her in order to find out, for science of course (well, mostly)! She seems to have mixed feelings about her back fin, but at least she’d look good in backless dresses 😆😆. Lucky us, we get to see Drago, Viper, and Diana in swim suits.😉😉
Another way to tell difference between shark and dolphin. Shark skin is rough.
The Encantado. Wonder how her physical went with that bit of knowledge…
“Oh for the…Reiniger, she does not have a ‘fully human form!’ Geez, get him on one mythic hybrid case…”
Very cute dolphin. I love swimming, I go to the local bath house at least twice a week to swim laps and to soak in the sauna/hot tub.
Re JA: Hey, Jesse! Hands on the wheel! Eyes up front! – Remember those trees you don’t want him to crash into.
Jessica is driving. That’s Miss Penning’s first name. Jesse, Jackie and Troye are on the backseat ^^
Loving the stars in Troye’s eyes.
Yeah; Troye is particularly adorable in this page. 🙂 All excited about the strange place Jesse & Jackie went to, and totally oblivious about the two of them being alone together. 🙂
Seems that I got this mixed up quite a bit:
I wasn’t aware of there being more than three people in the car, so I tried my best to match the names with them.
Actually I meant to address Jackie as the one who I thought was driving.
I really need to get the names strait – I’ve no idea who Miss Penning or Logan are at the moment (but hopefully will, once I’ve read chapter 2 and all of chapter 3)
done reading chapter 2 – still no clue about Logan
Miss Penning looks after Jesse & Troye while their parents are away on an extended trip(months). (It may be work-related, but I forgot.) She was, at some point in the fairly recent past, part of military special forces of some sort. Logan is someone she worked with in the military. That help much?
Panels 4 & 5: There should be a comma at the end of “Hey”.
Jesse’s Adventure, panel 3: Ditto “magical”.
Lastly, can we really call this a story? It’s more a showcase of side characters that ends abruptly.
The original comic idea was one page where all these hybrids would have one panel each, so I’d say this is way more of a story than the original idea was xD
So, why did Drago and viper change into swim gear when they were only picking her up and leaving immediately? Seems like a lot of trouble for nothing, and people CAN just go through to the pool area without changing.
Looks to me like they might have had some fun in the pool between swim training and leaving. She did say on the way home, doesn’t have to be right away…
ehhh. okay. you can *say* anything at all happened off screen, of course. The vibe, however: “Pick her up when she’s done”, the fact that the other two are visibly not wet at all, while the dolphin of course is, definitely implies she is being picked up and is ready to go.
Maybe Reptilefan just asked for some gratuitous swimwear, i dunno.
Since the author declined to answer means it’s none of my business, so I’ll move on.
That does seem like the logical thing to do, Screwball. After all; they’d most likely have to wait for the team to finish the training session before the pool would be open to them. Pretty obvious in the first panel that the swim team is taking up the whole pool for practice.
Bathing suits, woo! Sorry, I’ll move on now.
I REALLY like the dolphin design. And I can see how the dorsal fin could be a bit troublesome. Can’t be a back-sleeper & definitely a lot of clothing mods.
You’re quite right, Drakara, on all points. Chair backs too; and pretty much going to need a special-made driver’s seat when she gets a car.
Fin on the back may not help. But I bet the tail gives a huge advantage. It’s basically like having a propeller or an oar.
I was re-reading the comic strips, and just out of curiosity, has the basketball team had any real games since Kai joined?
Also, I’d like to see the twins on one of their vacations to Italy
Love your work!
None that Kai has been a part of, at least. That will come in the future, though, as well as a vacation chapter ^^
“Kaya! PLEASE stop trying to light the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is NOT a big candle!” 😉
“Kaya and Kai! Get out of the Colosseum’s gladiator pit! You’ll be attacked by crazed gladiators who think you’re wild beasts!”
“Kaya, get out of the canals! You have no idea where they’ve been and what’s in them!”
Kai! Help me grab your sister, she’s had too many chocolate espresso gelato!”
“Kaya, don’t put your brother in a toga and blow it up under him with a fan!”
“Kaya, you just ran into Capo Mista! We’re so sorry about that, signore Mista and Don Giorno!”
The fin may not be a competitive advantage for her, but that tail definitely is. Unless she is unable to move it at all, it’s an additional point of propulsion.
It kind of raises a question whether she has an unfair advantage compared to regular human kids of the same age.
I really like how this side comic features a different hybrid character in every page. Well done for making all these unique characters!
Sorry, didn’t mean to reply to you :p
I am liking all the various hybrids and seeing their unique designs and the little challenges they face, like Diana needing specially tailored clothes because of her fin. I am rather curious about all the different types of hybrids and what they are capably of, when I saw Diana I thought she’d be like a champion with how she is a hybrid of a sea creature so I thought it would give her an advantage but the thing about the fin I creating drag is understandable.
I wonder how they actually handle that, it would seem like certain hybrids would have unfair advantages compared to normal humans making competition inherently skewed towards the hybrids.
Cool, we now have cetacean hybrids!
I love it this was really cute!
Probably a bit late to change it, but Diana’s belly button should not be discernible when she’s wearing an opaque one-piece swimsuit like that.
