I’m going to assume there was a respectable time skip between the hospital trip and this page, or the doctors are going to be very embarrassed.
Nevermind, missed the top-corner box in the first panel. Poor Kai.
It’s okay xD
The day after the Doctors
is the worst time to get sick.
Why should school believe you?
It’s probably some sort of trick.
Kai needs some time alone,
away from his loving sister
and, if he gets really bored,
he might even claim he missed her.
The water’s not for drinking,
it’s for stopping the smoke alarm.
All the great things of Dragons,
snotfire is not part of their charm…
“snotfire is snotpart of their charm…” 😉
Lol!
Awwwww, poor Kai. I get the worst runny nose whenever I catch a cold, so I can relate. At least the scales should help prevent the rash from using too many tissues. Although to that end, that looks like Kai is using a handkerchief. If he roasts it every time he sneezes, shouldn’t he be using cheap, disposable tissues instead of nice cloth? It doesn’t seem particularly cost effective. xD As usual an interesting take on where to begin your next chapter Robin. I can’t remember ever seeing a character get sick with something like a normal cold in a book, comic, TV show, or movie. Consensus seems to be “what does the main character catching a cold add to the plot? It makes them seem like any other person.” That’s exactly what’s genius about it: you’re making your characters seem like normal people. You include all aspects of the real world in your story. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the level of immersion and character depth you’re able to create is astounding. A pleasure to read as always. Keep up the good work, and as always, stay awesome!
“I can’t remember ever seeing a character get sick with something like a normal cold in a book, comic, TV show, or movie.”
Wow, really? I can’t name an elementary TV show off the top of my head that hasn’t had someone catch a cold at some point. And there’s quite a few save-the-world type shows where the hero getting sick is an excuse to focus on the supporting cast while they pick up the slack.
It’s just about the only thing that happens in Doc Rat, except for the recent fires.
Well you probably won’t name a comic “Doc Rat” and talk about tennis or paintball.
Normal tissue paper might not withstand the blast unless he layers it up. Not to mention it’s so light stray embers could easily go floating off and maybe start a fire elsewhere in the room.
Maybe the tissue is made from flame-resistant material?
Dupont sales rep: You want thin sheets of Nomex to use as handkerchiefs? Why would you want that? That would be really expensive way to use that.
[ Kai demonstrates as above ]
Marco: That’s why. He goes through the cotton ones way too quickly.
Dupont Sales Rep: I’ll see what we can do.
beat me to it. No way to edit posts here I can see.
Nnnnnnn-OPE!
Interesting that they managed to have the fire proof handkerchiefs embroidered.
Kaya was bored that day. 😉

huh, I thought that was almost always a plot gimmick at least once in most of the cartoons I remember watching. But here’s a short video that should cure what ails you: https://youtu.be/ROtTk71qN7Y
Probably Nomex.
Kaowool could be an alternative, plus easier to acquire. Most hardware stores should have it.
But it looks like it is only in blanket form, like fiberglass insulation.
Nomex is cloth.
Ain’t nothing a pair of scissors can’t handle!
Batman had the flu at the beginning of the ‘Knightfall’ storyline. The one where Bane ends up breaking his back.
Thank you for your kind words, Alpha ^^
A character getting sick is something I haven’t seen an awful lot either, but it does happen. In fact, I got this idea from one of my all time favourite manga’s xD
I guess it really depends on what stories you watch/read :p
Wow, never a cold looked so awesome!
But it’s quite annoying xD
Alt text: “Maybe we should get some paper tissues…”
Me: Do you have any idea how much smoke paper tissues produce, or how quickly they crumble? You’re pretty much guaranteed to set off a smoke alarm before it’s in the bin, and Kai’s gonna have ash all over the couch. It’s not worth the money saving.
Didn’t think of that. Never put them on fire xD
I’d imagine disposable tissues would be far too quick to burn and not catch anything he’s sneezing. Like he’d almost be sneezing right through it like it was barely there. But yeah, Fire breathing when you sneeze is definitely a reason to stay home when you’ve got a cold.
Oh yeah, and sneezing right through them would be not very desirable xD
Interesting that a kid with a cold staying home is considered excessive… I can’t think of a place I’ve been where it’s not considered the norm (barring maybe instances where no parent can be around an the child cannot be trusted alone *at all*, but even then…)
Might just have been my mother then, but I’m pulling from my own experience here xD
All good ^^ I’m just pulling for mine.
Mine just happens to include people who did not want you near other children if you were any kind of sick(“It might be more than a cold./They might be infectious!”), cautious parents (“You need bedrest.”) and children who’d take any excuse to stay home(“Game time!”). Also at least one case of people trying to get someone sent home while ill, because they showed up and were almost out of it.
Now that I think about it though, iirc, I’ve been in a few similar discussions where people from the North America have been called “snowflakes” by a lot of other for keeping their kids home with “just a cold”, so maybe it’s a North America thing.
Just remember that until very recently the vast majority of U.S. businesses would fire workers for *not* showing up sick — contagious or otherwise — unless they had something like Ebola or were actually dead. (And the day is coming, probably sooner than later, when even a positive test for COVID-19 won’t get you a day off work.)
If I show up for work looking sick my colleagues and bosses are “you look terrible, go home, get better and don’t spread it around here.”
The trials and tribulations of being a dragon in a combustble environment! XD
Yeah probably best to keep him home for the day!
too bad a lot of the environment is combustible xD
He caught it at the doctor’s, didn’t he?
Yeah, he picked up a cold on the way out xD
“Gosh darn it, Kai! Didn’t I tell you -not- to touch anything in the doctor’s office??”
Jumped the gun there, but…
Jesse’s Adventure, panel 4: “God knows what” should be hyphenated.
Not necessarily. The term “[x] knows what/who/where/etc” can be hyphenated or not; neither form is strictly incorrect.
Didn’t know that. I’ll keep it in mind ^^
Sneezing fire is cute, in… such a weird way 😄
It’s because it’s Kai, isn’t it xD
That just means you passed up an opportunity to this page 20% cuter by letting -Kaya- catch the cold! 😉
Marco: Ya see, Our child can breath fire, so you might not want him to come to school right now.
Teacher: WhY dId YoU nOt TeLl Me?!
Marco. I thought you MIGHT have noticed!
Kaya set a bully on fire during the first week, I’m pretty sure the teachers know about the twins’ breath.
Oh, I’m sure the school knows, but that doesn’t mean they know about the fire-sneezing xD
Panel 2: Insert Nuke meme here.
Kai: Hey dad do we have another hankie? I feel anoth ah anoth ah ah ah *covers mouth & nose with hands* AHCHOOO!
Kai thinking: And great, now my hands are covered with flaming boogers. GROOOOSS!!!
That happened in a strip of Bruno the Bandit, his dragon caught a cold and sneezed without covering. Bruno ended up covered with burning plegm: “Aahhh! I’ve been napalmed!”
Too bad they don’t make hankies out of NOMEX.
I take it the world of Twin Dragons hasn’t had the COVID19 pandemic yet, or won’t. About three months ago I had a bad cold, with coughing and a fever; my supervisor made me stay home and if possible, get tested. I didn’t qualify for testing, but I recovered eventually, so it turned out OK, just in time to start working from home.
The comic started in 2015 and hasn’t covered six months yet. And even if it did, there’s no real reason to bring something like that into a fictional world.
If he thinks having a cold is bad, he should imagine what hay fever would be like.
Heh. Be amusing down on the farm. Set the hay on fire! 🙂
I actually did have hay fever and live on a farm. I wasn’t allergic to the hay (though it did make me itch like crazy and the dust occasionally made me cough when I breathed it in), I was allergic to the dozens of other pollen-spewing plants and trees that grew in the area. (Southwestern Virginia.)
Heheh! You’re like a (VERY) red-headed friend of mine. She’s allergic to The World! And lives on a ‘farm’ (central North Carolina), with cats, dogs, goats, and horses. Along with the accompanying hay, fur, dust, manure, etc. She does what she can about it and just keeps on going and doing what she wants. 🙂
Is there a similar effect when he simply blows his nose? Poor kid; I hope Kaya doesn’t have it, too!
Blowing one’s nose is a conscious action; sneezing is involuntary. Besides, the exit ports of their fire valves are located within the mouth.
Hears dainty little sneeze from the other room… 😉
I don’t remember having to go to school anyway when I got a cold.
Ah just send him to school after the first time he sets the desk on fire from a sneeze they well drive him home and never repeat anything about it.
I’m dangerous to be around when I have a cold to. Many years of free diving/scuba diving has improved my lung capacity to the point where a sneeze produces a sonic boom that could kill an elephant…….
Looks like he’d better use asbestos cloth. Are dragon lungs as resilient as their outer skin? Or are they just like human lungs?
Asbestos cloth comes apart way too easily when flexed and those small fibres do not mix well with lung tissue (or mix too well, depending on your point of view).
How about Nomex?
Oh, no!!! Kai’s sick?! This can’t be good, they just got cleared from the hospital! Hope he feels better soon.
Though I have no doubt this’ll be another good story arch.
Cold fire. 🙂
Or maybe he has a heat, rather than a cold?
… I can see Kaya being in heat but not Kai.
There is less than no reason to believe that was what Rombojorn meant.
I did indeed not mean “heat” in that sense, but replying to wordplay with more wordplay is fine with me.
Staying home with a cold is excessive? The general attitude I’ve known is “stay home, Get better quicker, don’t spread it to others.” Those who “soldier on” are generally considered to be spreading it to others.
Of course, in this case, I’m sure insurance is glad.
Agree, spreading the cold doesn’t seem like good idea, in school or in work.
Most workplaces I’ve been in specifically stated that if you have a cold they would rather you stay home. Better to lose the productivity of one person than a whole department!
Exactly, and staying home and resting will usually get you better quicker than trying to work. You’re never at your most productive when sick anyway.
The common attitude of parents to not let a child stay home with a minor cold has not aged well. lol
It’s (or was) rather common at least in my area. Sniffles / light cough / minor fever (under 100F) = school / work. It appears every country has weird quirks of their society that seem to negatively affect them. There were always a majority of kids out sick vs the few that would come in, so it’s not like it was a major deal. Noone liked that they were there, but sometimes the person soldiering on was you. Just a thing I guess
I think if we look at it as a few soldiering on, which noone liked being there (except parents / managers) we can agree it’s not just an american thing?
Another note, I assume the reason we are more likely to force workers to come in is due to our less costly social services which would pay for the days off? I honestly don’t know what people across the lake do when they get sent home for the day, how are they compensated? I could google it, but I much rather enjoy discussion 🙂
I feel like a page is missing here. Where are the higinx that happened on the way home where the sis spilled a mega sized slurpie on Kai?
If a firebreathing Dragon gets a cough or sneeze, you DON´T want them anywhere close to you.
But Kai is spot-on, it´s instant desinfection XD
Can’t wait for the next one!
Hopefully the twins don’t suffer from hay fever or nothing would be safe. Lol
“Hey!”
“CHOOO!”
“AAAHHH!!!” 😉
poor kai hope he gets better quickly, btw i admire the art style in these comics they give me a cartoon and a partial anime vibe from the characters
An hour later I reached here again, 5 years of work all read in 1 hour.
I’m soo glad to have discovered this and hope to enjoy for a long time more.
Keep up the great work!
#SmackDown
Maybe use wet wipes? The moisture would at least keep the material from igniting. Hypergolic fluids and mucus may just create napalm.
Let’s hope it doesn’t make napalm. It’s bad enough as it is xD
Another possibility, albeit a risky one…go to the hobby shop and get some model rocket recovery wadding…it’s basically flame-proof toilet paper placed between a model rocket parachute and the top of the rocket motor, which protects the parachute from the heat of the ejection charge when it goes off and pops the nose cone off the rocket, deploying the chute.
