The breakfast of champions
but something’s bugging him.
Problems with schooling
has left him feeling dim.
It’s not always the way
that the learner is at fault;
sometimes new ways are found
to open knowledge’s vault.
Scores are not it all, lad.
They never show full truth.
School is more than learning
the hidden truth of youth.
You can’t seek out this help.
You just don’t know it’s there.
But it may just find you
and you may find that’s fair
Not doing well in just one subject or multiple? Wondering if we are going to get to see Mathias receive some tutoring from an established character or a new one.
If that’s where this goes and it’s a character we know then I’m betting on Benji. He’s good with kids and seems nerdy enough to possibly take up tutoring.
Unfortunately for Mathias, multiple subjects ^^’
Even when it’s multiple subjects, sometimes it’s a single core problem.
My big problem with school, which I didn’t fully come to grips with until nearly flunking out of college, was I didn’t really fully comprehend that school isn’t truly about education. Education is, of course, the official true goal and always has been. But it’s never been the actual goal, by and large, because apart from a few rare and precious teachers, educating is a soap box opportunity and that takes priority over the education goal. They don’t see it quite like that. “These kids need to learn this thing that I know” is probably closer to the way they’d express it.
There’s also issues with how well the teacher conveys information. I’ve had teachers who used a lot of sports analogies, which tend to work well for most of the class, but not people like me. I’ve had a few teachers who instead used video game analogies, and since this was the 1980s, that meant I got the analogies but most of the class didn’t. I could easily see someone like Mathias having some issues as even simple “universal” experience stuff like “if I lift my hand off of this piece of paper, the paper will stay on my desk” is different for him.
In fact, thinking about that last point… If Mathias’ school uses even 10% of the paper my school used, school must be a living nightmare for him. Also, he must be a nightmare for his teachers. Even if he *can* consciously turn off his stickiness, it’s clear from what we’ve seen thus far that it’s active when he’s not consciously turning it off, and I understand from exercises to train my breathing that anything that just happens automatically is *very* easy to stop thinking about. Also, there’s a lot of other things in school that he also needs to think about. If he’s able to keep from being sticky enough to not be a class disruption, he won’t be paying enough attention to learn the material. So he’s got problems either way. Gloves might be a simple fix for this. Wearing latex, polyurethane, or nitrile gloves may be annoying, but so long as he’s not actually allergic to at least one of those, and he doesn’t have additional skin “breathing” requirements, he can probably get used to them such that he can focus on school work and the paper is just not an issue anymore.
Eyesight is another common “many subject one cause” type problem. Spiders tend to have interesting eyesight. He appears to only have the normal two eyes of a human, but that doesn’t mean he’s been entirely spared visual fallout.
I’m sure there are many other possibilities that I’m not thinking of.
All of this said, it’s still also possible that his issues are in part or entirely subject specific. But I recall my parents spending many hours trying to provide me subject specific help when my issues mostly weren’t subject specific.
Poor Mathias… As he’s crawling to school, his unhappiness is crawling in his skin, trying to leave wounds that will not heal!🎵 Maybe he can get a certain, red-haired, green-scaled, older than he looks, half Italian, Mythical Reptile Hybrid to tutor him.
A shower scene (er, panel)?! I wouldn’t have expected this to happen in the main comic, side art maybe. I would have expected Kai or Kaya, counterpart of the Ice Dragon Flatorte*, to be the recipient of such a trope! Well, I guess a little Spider Hybrid (how old is Mathias, anyway?) would be easier to censor than a Dragon girl with a tail about as long as she is tall.
*Kaya reminds me of another Dragon girl called Flatorte, both share personality traits such as a lack of modesty, impulsiveness, and a love of music. Look up “Flatorte is free!” and you’ll can see her level of modesty. Hopefully Kaya is more modest physically than Flatorte… Apologies for any pervy remarks, I’m just comparing two Draconic goofballs and expressing my surprise at the shower being shown.
Well, censoring is easy if you do silhouette’s like this :p
He lives! Hi Robin! By the way, will you be posting any of the art you’ve been making on your Sunday streams to DeviantArt and the like, such as the adorable Russian Cocker Hybrid girl? She barks funny.
Hey Turtimus. Yup, I live xD
I do intend to, but posting sketches to all the places I post to has gotten to be a lot of work (part of my motivation that I struggle with during therapy and such. I sometimes just can’t get myself motivated to do it.)
So I’ve been thinking of bundling them up in downloadable archives and upload them in batches like that. Still looking into how I best do that. Working on that 😀
and I’m glad you like Misha. Her ref sheet will definitely be uploaded soon.
Even though I personally hate it, might I suggest looking into Postybirb for uploading to multiple sites? ~
Care to elaborate on why you hate Postybirb? I personally am not very comfortable putting in my account info into a third party software. Shoot me an email if you want 🙂

Strong Miles Morales vibes on this page
I guess that’s true xD
It looks like the spider child isn’t doing well academically, and doesn’t have anyone they could call a friend that can help them out. I have a feeling that is about to change soon.
I remember reading about a couple of other spider-type people who usually do quite well in school, even if one of them was a target of bullying at this age. The other one is a Masters student in Ohio. Find what you are good at and excel there and see what help is available for the other stuff.
You read that right. It’s a bit of a sad opening and not what I usually do. Things won’t be all bad, though.
Oof, hope Matthias finds some support.
Poor Mathias. I hope something cheers him up.
Wait, he drinks coffee?
Try chocolate milk ^^
Steam threw me off.
Mathias is bad at school , or the teacher doesn’t like the spiders ?
School isn’t his thing ^^’
Love the spider backpack!
It is definitely eye-catching. 🙂
Poor Mathias has bought into the school’s propaganda; he doesn’t understand that the entire purpose of school is to convince half the kids (the poor ones) that they’re below-average learners (as half the kids must be) and so it’s their own fault they’re poor. I hope his parents are wise to this and talk him out of it.
PS Is it a deliberate irony that he has “math” in his name?
PPS It’d be better if the “Post Comment” button were below the captcha.
It’s not deliberate irony. The character belongs to one of my readers, and he named him Mathias ^^
I don’t know if I can do anything about the captcha position. It’s a wordpress plugin. I can see if it is in the options, though.
Is there any cool spider tricks he can do? Does have venom?
A precise species choice can make this really interesting.
Well he does appear to have webbing. Unfortunately, it -appears- to ooze out of his fingertips involuntarily. We have yet to see if he can also us it voluntarily.
I seriously doubt he has venom. I might be wrong, but I -think- Robin said none of the hybrids in the comic would be venomous.
