which movie? I didn’t base his name on a movie or anything, so if it is, it’s just a coincidence :p
Yes, there were several movies with a dog named Benji. The first was name, appropriately, “Benji”. They’re VERY old, I believe they came out in the 1970s.

There’s actually a remake, which came out more recently… Though by looking it up on IMDB, I see that it came out two years after the comment I am replying to…
The original Benji was released 1974 and was written, produced, and directed by Joe Camp. It featured an adorable stray mutt in a small city who helps a pair of young siblings out of a really dire jam. The dog can actually act without the need of a human voice-over actor or any such thing. No CGI either (this being 1974). Joe Camp was not a major Hollywood producer nor affiliated with any major studio, yet he managed to get it in theaters all over the country and it was something of a hit for being basically an indie film. It spawned several sequels. IIRC, the original Benji was played by the same dog who was on the original Green Acres TV sitcom.
I didn’t know there was a remake until reading Glenn’s comment. It’s on Netflix which I don’t subscribe to. It was done by Joe’s son Brandon Camp. I’ll have to check it out. I have very fond memories of the original.
