And so the team arrives
at the fully legal con.
Rex pulls his head down
as he needs his character on.
Cleo gets the stamp of approval
and our wolf waits in line
asking things he needs to know
and finding out it’s fine.
Kaya, please don’t stalk him
as he goes to find his girl.
Just like you around a mic
he’s got time for a whirl…
Diolch yn fawr iawn.
I’ve always wondered why the cons do the silly stamp thing. I mean, wouldn’t an identifier around your neck do the same thing? You can say it’s easy to lose or whatever, but a stamp is even easier to lose – by simply washing your hands
I’ve been to stamp cons and I must say, it took considerable effort to get rid of it. Just washing your hands after a toilet visit a couple times isn’t gonna get rid of it :p
Been to many conventions (I’m an adult, I can do what I like with my money… 😋 ), some of the smaller ones here use lanyards and cards, but the big 2 – Oz Comicon & Supanova – use wristbands that stick to itself via a patch of adhesive. They’re colour-coded to that event, with Saturday being this colour, Sunday this colour and full weekend this colour. And if you go to the event in 1 city, then head home & go to the same event there next weekend, they usually get confused about you wearing their wristband already… 😋
I do see the reason why they won’t use those wristbands in Hybrid City though. When the adhesive grabs the arm hair, it can be a bit annoying getting the hair out, I’d imagine it would be even worse for fur…
The cons you go to must use some seriously weak stamp ink. I had one of those things on the back of my hand for the better part of a month as a kid.
I was at the Michigan RenFest in Holly, the weekend after Labor Day. I got my hand stamped after going through weapons check (all my weapons were fully functional, but “peace tied” – I was dressed as a late 15th century footsoldier). The stamp stayed there for well over a week after our weekend at the fest was over, and I use pumice-loaded hand soap at my job. Even THAT didn’t take it off quickly!
Suspect that the ink might come off easily if your skin was covered with a lotion or something before the ink is applied.
Unless they’re creating photo ID badges, it’s a bit too easy to just let a friend borrow your badge to get in after you leave.
Even in today’s world, it’s more difficult to make a custom stamp than to make a custom photo ID on a lanyard. From a perspective of trying to prevent people from cheating their way in without paying the entry fee, a stamp is a more secure method than a printed badge that anyone with an inkjet can make.
Honestly, if you have access to a 3d printer, it’s not that hard. Just use soft-ish TPU as the filament for the stamp and you’re golden.
Identifyers can be lost or stolen. Doing the same with skin is significantly harder. And there was festival concerts first, where they used these systems, as there were some friend groups, who whishes to see performers playing at different case, but didn’t wanted to pay the daily price (as for the full time the day/price ratio was lower for the full festival). So they all go to the concerts they wanted to see, passing their identifiers to the next person – which is made the festival organisers losing on income.
So they instead invested a bit more in the ink’s quality.
Huh, apparently Cleo shows her ticket to a myrddraal.
At Dragoncon we were given badges on lanyards. Much easier than stamps.
Stamps are cheaper, can’t be lost and do not wash of that easily.
But badges are swag.
Can’t be passed off to a friend so they can get in free either. 🙂
Let the Con shenanigans begin!!!
I never went to a big con but based on my last convention center (Spiel in Essen) this one lacks flags, banners and so on.
Kaya the curious dragon-birdie, does that mean she’s a feathered dragon like a Coatl? XD
Benji sure like to keep his friends (or just Kaya) waiting. So the hand stamp is an ink based on fur dye, I wonder how it works on scales and regular skin… Better keep any mischievous Hybrids from playing with the stamps, or else some convention goers may have stamps on their foreheads or tails. For the next couple days, people will see that Benji and Rex went to Hybrid Con if they get a good look at their fuzzy hands.
Speaking of hands, I wonder if the artist’s hand is gonna be ok after drawing all the visible attendees after this chapter…
I saw a little piece from an old TV show recently, about attaching fur dye blocks to rams during the mating season. I think I’ll leave it at that…
There’s another webcomic artist who raises sheep and mentioned those color blocks in her comic’s forums at one point. 🙂
Rex has a goofy grin in panel three, like Ragatha after she became intoxicated from Stupid Sauce.
Nice try Kaya but it looks like you (and we) will have to wait to see Nora. But wait: what if we never see her or nwver realize it’s her? Ninja Nora!
“Kaya the curious dragon”
Seeing those two together, I think: Resident Evil 2.
LOL Panel 5: Cleo looks like she’s showing off a engagement ring. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Or recording a rap video.
I was too busy concentrating on Benji and Kaya’s pairing to notice before, but do you suppose you could add a comma to “year” in panel 3?
Not needed. Benji’s not pausing there.
