Bella Notte
An accordion also was a bit much to learn in thirty minutes.

I still think recorder is a stupid name for a wind instrument that does not record anything.
The flute is called a recorder?! I agree, that’s a stupid name. Thank you for mentioning it, because the word made me think that the music was coming from some sound-recording device and Annabella was just pretending to play the flute.
In German, the instrument is, I believe, called bekflaute, or something similar.
Anyhoo, it’s got more flute in the name than the English recorder.
Huh. In Finnish it’s called “nokkahuilu” which translates to “beak flute”.
Etymology is fun.
That word you are looking for is ‘Blockflöte’ (Block Flute, don’t ask me what the heck is up with that ‘Block’ though).
On the contrary, the (mostly metallic) transverse flute (or German flute, for whatever reason) is called ‘Querflöte’, which is much more appropriately named…seeing how ‘quer’ means ‘sideways’.
But yeah, there’s bound to be an interesting story to be had, regarding the naming of the ‘Recorder’.

The “block” is the inner piece of wood that almost entirely blocks the path of the player’s exhaled air, leaving only a narrow windway:

In German it’s “Blockflöte” which translates to block flute.
A flute (played sideways, blowing over the top of it) is related to but distinct from a recorder (played pointing away from your face, blowing into it like a saxophone). I agree that a recorder is badly named, since it doesn’t record anything.
It’s called a recorder because it was a tool a minstrel would use to ‘recorder’ (which was a verb meaning ‘to remember’/’recite’/’play back’, among other things)
I think those cheap plastic flutes were named “recorder” because they sound like a
bad recording of a flute lol. I used one in grade-school band, just… no…
Annabella, you’re pushing your luck, not to mention your relationship with Kai… At least Near is enjoying it and finding things amusing. I’d say she’s a keeper.
There was at least one person in the background a couple pages ago, so when I see the fifth panel, I like to think Annabella’s playing cleared out the room.
Hopefully they all left cause they were done…
the notes aren’t jagged & cracked like when most people represent badly played music, so there is some hope for Annabella on that front….
…I hope….
Wrong angle, the other guest was behind Kai.
At least Near’s laughing. Cousin’s plan is going well, though Kai’s not amused.
I wonder if they are the “rough-housing” kinda cousins – not above having a bit of a wrestle if the situation comes up. Something tells me if they are, we might just have 1 of those situations developing…..
Honestly, I doubt they are, especially with the Twin’s strength, but since the jousting was a thing, I can’t entirely rule it out….
Bella nutty, plays “Beautiful Night” at noon.
At least they got separate bowls of spaghetti, so Kai’s prediction about a single long noodle won’t come to pass.
Well at least is amused by the whole situation! XD
Hopefully Kai will regain his cool soon and politely ask Annabella to leave.
Having bought an accordion on a whim (though I did do probably about a half-hour of emergency googling on what I should look out for and what a good price was, so it wasn’t completely un-thought-out), I can confirm that 30 minutes is not enough time to learn an accordion.
Nor for that matter, is it enough time to develop the shoulder strength to stand around playing an accordion without your body complaining bitterly.
After the considerably more than 30 minutes of practice that I do have, I’m fairly confident that I can play “Doe, A Deer”, though I will still get even that wrong at times.
Kai making death threats
In response to Ana’s crap
This strip is pure GOLD!
Near is enjoying herself, but for how long at Kai’s expense?
Kai noticed her sudden appearance pretty quickly, he’s not too happy about this interruption of Annabella’s. She best be careful, Kai can literally throw her or kick her out of the restaurant if the restaurant staff don’t do so first. At least Near is having a good time, though I don’t know how she’d feel about learning that Anna’s been spying on them. Though I’d say it’s just about her turn to be messed with and teased…
This strip is comedy gold 😂 The fourth panel is my favorite – “Don’t do that fake Italian accent!” 🤣
Annabella is doing the over the top “Its-a me” goofy Italian accent.
It’s especially goofy given she IS Italian, and SPEAKS Italian.
Hoping Kai doesn’t unleash the flamethrower.
I’d like to see what happens if she plays the tune that originated in The Legend Of Zelda.
Still alive seems more appropriate.
That game’s instrument was a recorder.
The Doctor played a recorder,
back in the Troughton days.
I wonder if Annabella
knows the tunes he plays?
She certainly has Kai dancing
to the tunes she chooses.
She has things tied up
and, it seems, she rarely loses.
Near’s having a blast
our of (near) sibling games.
She’s found out the knight
knows a couple of right dames…
Okay, Anabella. Helping with the geostash was clever; the reservation was pushing it; now you’re just actively ruining the mood.
Don’t be -too- hard on recorders. There was a lot of Classical music written for them; including several by Mozart and one of the Bach children. 🙂 I’ve heard a piece or two and it can be quite good when played on a good instrument by a good player. 🙂
Part of what gets me is that, AFAIK, a recorder can usually only play 8 notes (that’s how mine is).
The real question: Is it at LEAST a decent, wooden recorder? Or is it a cheap one… maybe even plastic (like mine)? 🙃
From what I can see, recorders typically have five holes going down the center. That’s twelve “basic” notes right there (2 for no holes covered, 5 for one hole covered & 5 for four holes covered). Then there are the variations from only having two or three holes covered, as well. And that’s only paying attention to the five solo-holes, and ignoring the two pairs of double holes. Even if your recorder cheap plastic recorder primarily has four solo holes, it should still make up to ten different simple notes.
Something I find highly amusing that nobody else seems to have mentioned. This comic implies, if not outright states, that Annabella managed to learn to play Bella Notte on the Recorder in thirty minutes. Not only learnt it in that time, but managed to play it well enough that Kai easily recognized the specific song from a few seconds of her playing it. It’s showing both her obsession with romance, and the fact that she’s likely a genius, all in one page!
