News travels fast, but in all honesty, are we really that surprised? I like that the back seats are tail friendly. “Where’s your tail?” “In the trunk.”
> “Where’s your tail?” “In the trunk.”
… God, I hope not. Crate of soda + driver forced to brake sharply = instant Pikachu tail …
I think Kai’s making the right choice here.
Interested or not, upending my and/or my family’s lives(also no guarantee the mom or dad would want this, that this wouldn’t cause potential strife) just so we could date, esoecially without talking first, would leave a weird taste in my mouth. Doubly so if it’s not even my partner, but a friend of theirs playind cupid.
If we are already dating, for a prolonged period, and know that we are comfortable together, it might be different. If we are already floating the idea of living together, or closer to each other… But not just because it’s an option.
Little birdie,
why do you fly upside down?
it’s amazing,
that the way you get around…
“Little Birdie” A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
So Dragon green are tattle tails,
telling of their brothers’ desire?
Relating tales of a forest cat
hot enough to light his fire?
Cleo believes in helping out;
well throwing cash to help, I mean.
Kai wants to take it slow.
Cleo’s good for offering but
has to understand, it’s not her show.
Benji’s got it right it seems
whilst Rex is staying out of things.
Dating’s new to the White Wolf.
His speciality is running rings…
Diolch yn fawr iawn.
Benji has it right! That would definitely be a bit much way too soon. Not that I think Near would object much if she’s looking at the student exchange program.
Benji, that’s Right!
there´s looking at a temporary(!) exchange program to get to spend more time with an interesting guy you just met, and there´s uprooting your entire life, and that of your parents, to move across half the globe……so yeah, i´m definitely with benji, that would be overkill.
now, if things develop well during that student exchange, we can talk again about cleo´s idea……btw, just how long will that program last, surely more than just a couple of weeks given the distance? i´m thinking more like, a couple of months up to a year?
Student exchanges usually last for a full year.
sometimes more than one. kind of depends on the program, who’s paying the costs, and how well the student does at the school in terms of academics and behavior.
I know Cleo means well but that is way too far. They only had one date and don’t know if anything more can come of it. I mean maybe in a few years if their long distance relationship sparks something or if they already had a Romeo and Juliet style obsession on each other. But this could get really ugly if they don’t work out and Near is stuck living in America. I mean I still get that Cleo likes using her wealth and family connections to help her friends but this is too much after just one date.
Would Benji do a barrel roll in the Millennium Falcon? Or would he mess it up?
Gossipy dragon… Kaya just can’t keep her big snout shut, can she? Thankfully, Kai doesn’t seem to mind all that much. Cleo’s offer on the other hand… Sometimes her social skills make Kaya look normal. Benji making a space pun while dressed as Han Solo. Was that intentional on his part or was it an accident when he compared Cleo’s offer to launching something into orbit? And what is Rex’s opinions and feelings on Kai going on a date with Near? Jealousy? Annoyance that Kai has a new distraction from basketball? I wonder how Near would react to meeting Kai and Kaya’s friends.
> Was that intentional on his part
He did *not* say that the Kessel Run rules forbid that kind of auxiliary propulsion, so … 😛
Rex doesn’t seem to be the jealous type, plus we know of at least two girls he’s aware of that would happily go out with him if he wanted a girlfriend. Wouldn’t put it past him to work him like a dog in front of near if she came to practice as his way of teasing him.
Honestly, Kaya, you already know how eager Cleo is to throw money around. Did you really think it was a smart idea to tell her about your brother’s Australian girlfriend before she even rightfully has that status?
I agree with most of you that Kai and Near’s relationship is not a good reason to uproot her family and move to the other side of the planet.
Speaking from Vincent’s (Near’s dad) POV, however, I have a slightly different opinion.
• Vincent might be looking for work.
• Given his daughter has expressed an interest in Hybrid City, he might be interested in opportunities there.
* He might even *want* to work for Cleo’s dad’s company.
Vincent should be informed of the opportunity without any pressure from the kids about their relationship.
My daughter’s friend’s father (say that five times fast) once came to me after school and asked if I was an engineer. Turned out his company was looking for someone who did what I did.
I ended up working for that company for years, and I loved it.
Nevermind pressure; Vincent should be informed of the opportunity in such a way that it appears to have NOTHING TO DO with the kids’ relationship. He’s already proven himself to be a bit of a judgemental ass; if he finds out that Portas has ANYTHING to do with the Romeros and their twin dragons, he might refuse a high-paying job with good benefits and healthy working hours OUT OF SPITE.
Well, I can also judge his actions based on being an overprotective, loving father. Kids don’t come with owner’s manuals, he may not realize he’s being overprotective.
Especially if Near is his first and only child.
That’s also fair, yeah. As much as I’m inclined to be miffed about him being overprotective, he might not realize it until he’s told by another parent. But the fact remains that he might refuse something that benefits him and Near both BECAUSE of that overprotectiveness, and I don’t want EITHER of them to suffer from that.
Panel 2: Maybe add a comma to “internet”?
It’s kinda optional. He’s not pausing so no comma needed. If he pauses to slightly change the direction of the topic, then a comma would be of use.
“Kaya as a bird would probably fly upside down”
I doubt that. She’s not inverted…er, introverted.
She *is* proficient at turning things upside down, though …
One of the things a lot of you are overlooking is that relocating Near’s immediate family does not just effect them. There is also the effect it would have on extended family. There would be brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers Aunt, Uncles, grandparents left behind. If they are a close knit clan that can be some powerful emotion and ties to break.
Considering that the unanimous opinion in this comment section is that Near’s family ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT be relocated to Hybrid City just for the sake of Kai’s date, I’m genuinely curious what makes you think that ANYONE is overlooking those people and the effects on them.
Also, if “brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers” fall under “extended family” then who the frick qualifies as “immediate family” that you think would be going with Near to Hybrid City?
I was just trying to be complete in my assent of who could be affected. Vincent and Wife both have Parents. They probably both have siblings, those brothers and sisters are going to have children.
And the reason I said a lot of you seemed to be overlooking the point is because no one had mentioned the fact in any previous post.
Considering that everyone was DISAGREEING with the idea of Near’s family relocating to Hybrid City, what reason did anyone have to mention the fact that doing so would affect their extended family when the consensus is already to NOT do so just based on the effects on the immediate family?
I’m not who you’re replying to, but you said, “I’m genuinely curious what makes you think that ANYONE is overlooking those people and the effects on them[,]” and I want to hop in with an answer of, “Cleo might not be.”
Cleo might be caught up with thinking, “Hey! I’ve got a friend who likes a girl; they should be together! I can make this happen!” And she might need someone (like Benji here) to remind her of the big picture.
I don’t want to go as far as saying Cleo IS suffering from “tunnel vision,” but I’m saying that she COULD be having tunnel vision, and “not thinking about extended family” could be part of it.
Easily solved, of course. I think Benji’s remark here, and possibly some follow-up in the next strip could easily make Cleo lose any tunnel vision she *might* have.
I don’t know how that reply was canceled. I was trying to reply to DTIBA.
Ugh, I’ve had that happen before. The worst part is that replies are all one box regardless of where it’s going, so you don’t get any sort of warning that you’ve accidentally hit “cancel reply”, especially when the comment you’re trying to reply to is at the bottom of the page like mine was.
And yeah, fair enough, Cleo does seem to be not accounting for things, but Kalibitybat’s comment looks like they’re addressing the comments section, which is what confused me.
In this whole debate about overlooking extended family, all three of you are overlooking the fact that Near didn’t grow up in Australia. Her family already moved away from any extended family they have when they moved to Australia. I’m not advocating moving Near’s family to Hybrid City, just pointing out that the whole discussion is irrelevant – unless you think the whole extended family moved to Australia for the sake of Vincent’s job, but can’t move again.
Interesting point. I think I likely missed noticing that point, getting caught up in the last couple updates of the comic and forgetting what else was stated during and before the date. I don’t re-read the previous updates…almost never. And I tend to forget details over time, especially if they’re obscure. Thank you for reminding me of this.
I don’t think I was “overlooking” that fact so much as I was pointing out that any details about extended family are already irrelevant, because having Near move is already a bad idea based on her IMMEDIATE family. But I will cop to having completely forgotten that Near moved TO Australia in the first place, so I can’t say that I WASN’T overlooking that fact (if that makes sense).
I’m not sure if I should continue shipping Kai and Cleo if Cleo is shipping Kai and Near? Hm. Unless Cleo wants to speed things up so that Kai and Near can date and break up sooner? Not sure…
…Black hair looks really good on Cleo.
It really does look good on her, yeah. The colour contrast is just nice. She mentioned dyeing her hair in the Q&A, so I’m wondering if she went full-out or just put on a wig. If the former, we might get to enjoy it beyond just the convention.
