Well, I was expecting Nomi to end up missing her margin only for Kaya to cover it with the prize money, but there goes that prediction. Sorry, Kaya, but when the whole con has rules, all the events at the con have to play by the rules.
Also, pretty much every convention that doesn’t explicitly have pyrotechnics as part of the event prohibits fire. Every con I’ve heard of that has pyrotechnics as part of the event has a lot of rules about fire, which basically condense down to, if you don’t have permits with the convention hall, the city, and the state/province/country, you can’t do fire in the con, and if you do have permits, they explicitly cover when and where you can fire. There’s virtually no margin for unscheduled fire.
Some how I knew she would do that.
Ouch.
Pride comes before a fall;
fire, it seems burns up all.
Goodwill burnt upon the pyre
(she knew not to set the stage on fire)
Her burning chance just failed.
Her top five hopes are impaled.
She races, burning, up the charts
(to where she lives in our hearts)
Nomi’s chances are still alive
The Lemur’s heading for the top five.
The Alien figure will be hers
(unless there’s a hybrid Olly Murs…)
Diolch yn fawr iawn.
On the one hand, sucks she was disqualified… on the other, most conventions I attend do tend to have rules like “No real weapons anywhere” “No prop weapons, excepted photo area” “[dangerous items] prohibited” “View convention rules” posr every 40 feet between “Ask before taking pictures” posters for a reason -_-
Absolutely something she should’ve checked before doing.
“No fire indoors.” is usually the default. That’s why they stay home from school when the have they sneezies.
Really, she genuinely should have known better.
Sometimes, especially for her, knowing better and exercising restraint (and following said rules) in the heat of the moment are two completely different things. Especially for someone who produces fire as naturally as everyone else breathes.
Whoops, always them little details that get ya! Well at least Kaya told them about her channel, don’t doubt she picked up several new followers.
meh, getting disqualified only made her performance more memorable. her rep will totally increase to level ‘badass’ after this spontaneous pyro show!
At the very least she didn’t set the roof on fire.
Sorry Bloodhound Gang
Kaya’s chances of winning have gone up in flames.
But the good news is her followship online increased by at least an order of magnitude this day.
Now it should be big enough to fund her chocolate lifestyle. I don’t mean “independantly wealthy”, but at least “No, I don’t need a job to pay rent.”
Or maybe I’m >still< underestimating her chocoholism.
Or overestimating how much money utube’s willing to pay out…
Starting to believe the band recruitment theories more after the first panel.
Nice alternate text: ‘through the fire and flames’ a is song by DragonForce.
Quite a well-known one. It was the boss track on one of the guitar hero/rock band games.
I find it really funny that the guy running the contest is so jaded that he sees someone breathe fire right in front of him with no warning, and his only reaction is to DQ her and ask her to leave.
first person in pink saying it’s fine because they linked their utube is the same type of thing as “doing this for exposure” but without the consent
To be fair, though, you have to expect to get filmed when you’re singing on stage in a public karaoke contest at a convention.
That depends on the con rules. A lot of cons prohibit cameras/filming. Many of these will have an official cameraperson who will make videos of each contestant for contests like this. Those videos may be available for purchase if the contestant agrees, but they usually won’t be livestreamed, and certainly not without the contestant’s knowledge.
This doesn’t stop people in the audience from breaking the rules, of course.
That said, when people in the audience break the rules, there may be consequences, which can include getting banned from the con for life. The time I saw someone livestreaming illicitly at a Star Trek convention, the security staffer who grabbed them and determined they weren’t just recording but livestreaming said they’d be banned for life. I didn’t know them and don’t know what happened after they left the conference room. Admittedly, that wasn’t karaoke, that was a ST:TOS cast members answering questions on stage. I don’t recall the year, but it was within the last decade.
Through the Fire and the Flames, good thing it’s not We Didn’t start the Fire, that would’ve been a bit dishonest. I guess Kaya just isn’t allowed to put her heart and soul into her singing, the fire gets her disqualified.
Kaya nailed that performance aaand she got herself disqualified. That stinks. The no fire rule seems rather harsh for dragons when they breathe fire and can do so involuntarily, particularly when they sneeze. Still, Kaya didn’t think that plan through enough, so she’s at fault for that. Still feels rather harsh on the staff’s part, they could’ve just deducted points from her score or bumped her prize down a level. It would be a bad time for her to sneeze right now, the risk of fire sneezing would probably get her kicked out.
Looks like Kaya is gonna go viral and her self promotion insert may help with that, though the judges don’t like it. Rather rude to post videos of Kaya without her consent. I wonder when we’ll get to see who these mystery texters are and how they’ll induct Kaya into their group… I wonder how the audience will react to her Dragon rawr, with they be impressed? Scared? Amazed? Will they think it’s fake? And does this mean Nomi considers Kaya her equal or superior in karaoke?
Nomi doesn’t have to worry about getting knocked from the top five now. Kaya is not going to hear the end of this from Kai and her friends and let’s just hope that mommy and daddy Romero doesn’t hear about this
Oops; didn’t bother to read the fine print, huh?
She’s fortunate that the ceiling is much higher than it was in Le Constellation in Crans-Montana.
I don’t think that fine print was specifically in the Song Contest Rules. Most likely “No Fire” is a part of the rules for the venue, and since she didn’t seem like Kaya was carrying anything that could create fire she wasn’t given a warning. The disqualification is the closest they can get to an official punishment without having mentioned anything beforehand or potentially having likely issues with discrimination against those this Convention is supposed to be celebrating. Which is why they’re not calling security.
first i called it last week kaya is getting an invite to something. second she is going to break 1000 on utube thank to that song and her self advertising. finally she did NOT use fire she breathed it their is a difference.
I still have a bad feeling about the mystery texters. They have the same vibe as the villain from Alvin and the Chipmunks.
I honestly was expecting Kaya to breath fire the entire time, but on accident. Which means that I don’t get to see Kai walk in with a fire extinguisher, which I honestly was expecting. Kaya IS the twin with poor self-control, after all.
Geez, that lack of patience is crazy.
Well, was she really in it to win or just to put herself out there? She got to sing and be the center of attention. Plus I think it was worth getting disqualified to do the fire breath. That’s pretty metal.
Unfortunately; breathing fire and getting banned for it will probably will probably boost her popularity with all her fans, except those who really matter. 🙁
Who exactly do you think ‘really matters’ in the fanbase of an impulsive dragon hybrid who is going to look down on breathing fire impulsively? Because that sounds a lot like the sort of ‘true fan’ bull$#!+ that every fanbase is better off without.
