You know… back during the twins’ birthday, I could’ve sworn Rex was aware, and taking advantage, of Amy’s crush on him. But him being THIS stubborn about receiving a gift makes me think he’s genuinely oblivious.
Also, fun fact: my family collectively refers to shopping on any online marketplace as “e-buying” so it genuinely took me a solid minute before I realized that was supposed to be a TD counterpart of eBay.
It’s unlikely Rx was taking advantage of her crush since the game they were playing was supposedly complete luck. Unless Amy was cheating taking advantage of her wouldn’t do anything.
YMMV on whether or not Luck Magic counts as cheating, but I’m pretty sure deliberately making her screw up her spell counts as “taking advantage of her crush”. But I digress. My point is, I THOUGHT Rex’s all-in play with hand contact was him being aware of Amy’s crush on him, and using that to convince her to let them win. But Rex’s behaviour on this page suggests I was mistaken.
This was adorable until the Trojan Horse part xD
Yeah; I don’t like to think of Amy as a schemer, especially where “romance” is concerned. Actually; I don’t like to think of ANYone as a schemer with that.
Little bun’s heart all aflutter! Just don’t yank on that hook too hard too fast Amy, gotta let it set properly first.
Amy’s so cute when flustered.
Looks like Rex still isn’t used to getting gifts. Someday, Rex, someday…
Not expensive ones from people he’s not close to anyway.
Interesting. Does this mean she actually had a plan when she entered a drawing for a prize she didn’t want for herself?
I believe Amy did not “enter” the drawing; she was “given” the ticket by a dealer. Also; someone else, Cleo, told her Rex would like it. It’s not her own premeditated plan. (see 5th panel of the previous strip.)
Nope:
1. This is not the only prize – there are probably lots of minor prizes to win.
2. She did not actively enter the drawing: you don’t buy the raffle tickets – you get them as an extra, when buying something else.
3. She probably thought her luck failed her, when she did not win a useful minor prize. (before realizing the main prize was actually a treasure)
That last line has some worrying implications. Either way I need to share the leaps of logic my brain went through reading it: rex=basketball player, Troy=high school musical basketball player, Troy=trojan war, trojan war=trojan horse.
Back to more top brain analysis, we don’t have enough of Amy to make a judgement for real, but she might have a complex developed from her super luck of eventually getting what she wants as long as she takes some sort of action towards it. If so hopefully she can handle it healthily and her eyes don’t start flashing red later.
That’s, um… quite the chain. I mean, it’s not like the Trojan horse is some obscure reference; you find works EVERYWHERE using “Trojan horse” (or a lore-appropriate equivalent) to mean “my advantage disguised as a gift to them”. There are people who know what a Trojan horse is without knowing Troy was the name of a city.
It’s amusing that Troy(Troye?) is also the name of a character in the “Jessie’s Adventure” side comic. 🙂
As a dungeon master for DND I’m always looking for inspiration and I sometimes link things through weird chains like that to get ideas. I’ve done it so much that my brain does it automatically sometimes. Just felt like sharing that particular roundabout.
Yandere Amy, that doesn’t sound too good. Thankfully, this is Amy Fields, not Amy Rose, so she’s not much of a physical threat to any potential “rivals.”
Does Amy know what a Trojan Horse is? Because I don’t think those books are a false gift containing a nasty surprise. The set is more like the Golden Fleece, a precious gift given out of kindness (I’m referring to the origins of said fleece, not how it was obtained by Jason and the Argonauts). Rex is grateful to the little bunny… girl*, so Amy can and should count that as a win. And she can also consider managing to mostly keep her composure while offering the set to Rexy a win as well (barely).
I wonder how Rex will pay Amy back for this precious gift, maybe getting her something she has her eye on? The anticipation seems to be killing Amy, or it’s that she forgetting to breathe. The Lucky Bunny seems on the verge of passing out. Nomi may have to call River over to carry Amy if the little bun can’t compose herself.
*Jokingly implying that Rex remembered that Amy is a girl after meeting her once and not dwelling too much on the experience.
I’m pretty sure she’s referring to the gift as a Trojan Horse not because there is a nasty trap inside such as Greeks looking to loot a fortress-city, but because it contains a memory – the memory that AMY was the one who gave Rex the box set of C&D books. Interacting with or even looking at them will remind him that it was Amy gave them to him, that he wants to pay her back for giving him such a valuable gift, and so on…
Meaning he’ll be thinking about her every time. About how nice she was. About what he can do for her to pay her back, possibly leading to him learning about some of her interests so he can plan around that. Maybe even other details about her, either directly or indirectly, such as “she has all that fur, maybe a new fur care kit? What colours & texture was it?” and so on…
And the more he thinks about Amy, the more of a chance she has of them becoming friends, then maybe closer than that over time….
So it’s a Trojan horse because she’s hoping that memory will allow her to get around the walls separating them, just without the use of Greeks inside an actual giant horse assembled from parts of their fleet of ships…
You all are making a much too dark interpretation of Amy’s “Trojan horse’ comment. First, the entire sequence – getting a raffle ticket, winning the prize, Cleo suggesting that she give it to Rex, him accepting the books – was entirely unplanned and serendipitous. There was absolutely no scheming involved. In fact, she seems so innocent that I doubt she is even capable of scheming. Only after she walked away did she realize the gift’s potential. Not that, as a true Trojan horse, it would inject nastiness but that it would infiltrate Rex’s consciousness with thoughts of her and (in her mind), enhance her chances with her crush. So no threat, physical or otherwise. Just a 12 year old’s fantasy of a crush returned.
Uh-oh, Rex now owes a favor to a little bunny that’s obsessed with him, and we all know she will collect as soon as she gathers the nerve
This is a very cute and fun -comic- strip… (I love Nomi in the last panel! :-)) …but IRL they are too far apart in ages for their age range to even think about romance. (I think Rex is aware of that, even besides his basketball interests.) Give them another 10-15 years for this age difference to become reasonable and realistically workable. I believe Robin is working this very well in his comic relationships and there will eventually become some reasonable understanding between Amy and Rex.
IF memory serves; Rex is 16-17 and Amy 9-10.
Amy is 12, just a very very smol bunny.
So he’s 16, maybe turning 17 soon, while she’s 12? Maybe turning 13?
She might be a bit young at the moment, but they could still become friends, then when she’s a bit older & a more appropriate age, they could start dating…
Hopefully he realises/finds out in time for that to happen. Seems I had a girl whose family was friends with mine with a crush on me, similar age gap too. Only for various reasons, I was completely oblivious to her interest. In the end, I was only told about her crush once she had fully grown up, met someone else, married them & was pregnant with his kid…
I’ve had time to think about it (yay hindsight -_- ), and if I had of known, maybe even at a event which in hindsight could have been her trying to get my attention in that way, I would have basically done what I’m suggesting here – not dated immediately, but shared contact info at least, suggest to her she considers other people, possibly get to know her purely in a friends context and if she’s still interested by the time SHE turns 18, then see how it goes. Gives both parties time to consider the situation, gives her time to see if it is just a childhood crush or something more serious, as well as a set timeline for things to progress if they do so…
See, that’s the fun thing about a work of fiction; you don’t have to adhere to real-world @$$#013es who act like there’s a problem with two people who care about each other because of some arbitrary aspect that has nothing to do with their feelings or their ability to approach the relationship in a mature manner. The prejudiced frickers in the real world who act like there’s something wrong with a teenager being involved with a teenager just because there’s a few years between them don’t get a say in a fictional work’s developments. The creator is allowed to respect the fact that relationships don’t go from zero to bedroom in two days and there’s nothing wrong with two people who are interested in each other being involved in the time it takes them to both be physically and mentally prepared for such things, without acting like arbitrary bull$#!+ such as “five years is only okay if you’re both in your twenties” is going to affect anything.
…why do I feel like Rex is planning on putting it up on e-buy himself and paying Amy back that way?
Hmmm, I doubt it. It was rather difficult for him to get the basic Players Handbook in the 1st place (saved up enough money, only to loose it all to emergency repairs, then Cleo had to convince him to let her buy the book for her), now he’s gotten most if not all the other books, recourses that can greatly assist his C&D experience. He’s already agreed to repay her for the gift, it might be a bit rude to essentially get rid of it and throw some cash at her, for lack of better wording….
Don’t know why you would think that as it would be the very last thing that Rex would consider. If anything, he would consider it sacrilegious. It would denigrate and dishonor her gift and he knows it.
I was thinking Rex might offer to do some work at the game store when he was some free time.
Amy’s mention of Rex wasn’t reciprocated, so that’s a pass on the Bechdel test.
Amy is in the foreground when she says that. Rex is in a fairly distant background, out of hearing range, and talking to the other three. We have NO idea if he’s mentioning Amy’s name in a positive way or not, or even at all. Have to wait until at least next week to find out.
And I like Lord Castigator’s view. Sounds like a clearer explanation that pretty much agrees with what I said at the beginning. 🙂
The Bechdel test determines whether or not (mostly not) a piece of media features two named female characters who talk to each other about something besides a man.
I think my comic has already proven that on many occasions. Also, I do think the test is a bit flawed. Sure, in a limited piece of media like a movie, where you have about 2 hours on average, this test could be valid. A long running series that handles any kind of romance will at some point feature two woman or man talking about their love interest and nothing else for that scene. It’s kind of unavoidable and a very natural thing to do in something that runs for a long time.
I agree that the test could be used on movies, not so much on any long running piece of media. Just my two cents on that test.
Long running media have advantage in passing the Bechdel test: they only need ONE conversation to pass, it doesn’t need to be true of EVERY conversation.
Her charm offensive failed
but she won anyway.
Amy didn’t even know
she was rolling the die today.
Cleo’s doing her best;
helping out her friends.
She just needs to know
generosity often needs to end.
Amy won her prize
and it’s not in a box.
in fortune rolls she’s skilful;
less a Rabbit, more a Fox.
Diolch yn fawr iawn.
Vulpine cunning, yes. But fox paws are not lucky…as far as I know?
He’s too old for you, Amy. Besides, I think he might be getting together with Cleo… (hint hint)
Breath Bunny Breath!
Are we going to see Amy’s fantasy or maybe fanart of her and Rex’s wedding?
I must be stupid. Why is everyone going “Oh oh! Doom!” while I’m going ?
Oops. Forgot that less-than – squee! – greater-than would be interpreted as xml. That’s what I was trying to say. “…while I’m going ‘squee!’?”
I want to know why rodent hybrids aren’t shown with buck teeth
That is all…
