Interesting how the term Meta has evolved(it didn’t used to be an acronym/backronym, it was sourced from Ancient Greek, though the use remains similar to the use decades ago ^^). And yeah, following the Meta is pretty financially rough… -_-; I always preferred to just get a ton of cheap stuff and see if I could make something functional. Occasionally I’d look at single cards that might help my builds, but I was into like 10 TCG/CCGs, and even if I could only play 3-4 with anyone other than friends, devoting tons of cash to those didn’t seem worth it, unless I wanted it to be my job.
When you have to get a job to afford your hobbies! I’ll just stick to my single player video games.
I’m pretty sure “most effective tactic available” must be a backronym. (That’s not a complaint. Backronyms are fun.) When I looked up “off-meta” to understand what Mikey was saying, the explanation I found was that this sense of “meta” is a clipping of “metagame”, meaning “the game outside the game” or “the game of gaming the game”, semantic-shifted into “the conventions of a gaming community”.
100% a backronym, yes. The modern uses of meta both in games and sci-fi find their roots in ancient Greek. The prime uses of meta- generally refer to “ouside/’after’-X” e.g. “outside the game”, or, iirc,occasionally “field that studies of itself”.
Nomi is quite young, and the comic takes place around when the acronym started to appear, so I’m guessing she just heard these things from others and took them as fact.
The dopey Mimikyu must be pretty powerful if it’s so expensive… Maybe that’s why it’s confused, that its value is mind-boggling?
A trademark safe Mimikyu! The artist’s really going in for the Pokémon references here. So that’s what Kaya was “foxing” about, and I can see why! $1,400 dollars for a a single card?! I really don’t like it when groups or companies auction off their services, especially transportation. Kaya now knows what the Meta is (for this card game, has it been named yet?) thanks to the brainy little Lemur girl, Nomi! Her nickname is pretty accurate if you’re familiar with Japanese; nomi, short for nomisen, means brain or brain tissue. And her brain must be full of as much information as possible about her interests.
The return of Lemur princess Nomi’s faithful friends, Agnes the Horse girl and Rachel the human! I wonder what’s got them so excited that they’re shouting to Nomi about… Or are they trying to say Nomi Nomi no Mi? Either way, this might be a distraction for Nomi regarding her allowance and hobbies.
